You Are Not Alone: Ashley’s Message to Grieving Teens
When Ashley Wong lost her mom, Kelly, she was just 16 years old.
One day, life felt normal. The next, everything changed.
Like many grieving teens, Ashley found herself navigating a world that suddenly looked different. Milestones, celebrations, and everyday moments became reminders of someone she loved and missed.
Through that journey, Ashley found support at Valerie’s House, where she connected with others who understood what it felt like to lose a parent.
Today, Ashley is a college student and one of Valerie’s House’s Teen Ambassadors, using her experience to help other kids and teens know they are not alone.
Recently, Ashley shared a heartfelt letter written to other grieving children and teens.
“You are not alone and there are people who want to support you in this difficult time,” Ashley wrote.
Her message reflects what so many Valerie’s House families discover: grief can feel isolating, but connection makes a difference.
Over the years, Ashley has continued to stay involved with Valerie’s House, giving back to the organization that supported her during some of the hardest moments of her life. Through her role as a Teen Ambassador, she helps raise awareness about childhood grief and encourages others to reach out for support.
For Ashley, one of the most important lessons she has learned is that grief is not something you have to carry by yourself.
“Lean on your support system and take care of yourself,” she wrote.
Ashley’s story is a reminder that while grief becomes part of a person’s story, it does not have to define their future. With support, connection, and understanding, grieving kids and teens can find hope, build resilience, and discover that brighter days are still ahead.
At Valerie’s House, no child has to grieve alone.
