Valerie’s House Children and Teens Featured on ESPN with Captain James Marko
Children and teens from Valerie’s House were featured on ESPN through a special episode created by Southwest Florida native and ESPN fishing host Captain James Marko.

The episode highlighted an unforgettable experience for children and teens in the Valerie’s House program, many of whom have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or caregiver.
For grieving children, opportunities like this can mean so much more than a day on the water or a television appearance.
They can be a reminder that they are seen.
They can be a reminder that they matter.
And they can be a reminder that they are not alone.
Captain James Marko, a Cape Coral native with a special place in his heart for Valerie’s House, created the idea for the special episode and gave our children and teens an experience they will never forget.
Many of the children featured in the episode came to Valerie’s House during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Like many grieving children, some struggled to talk about their grief, lost confidence after a significant loss, or had a difficult time imagining what the future might look like.
That’s why experiences like this are so meaningful.
When a community surrounds grieving children with love, encouragement, and support, it sends a powerful message that they are valued and supported. It helps children build confidence, create positive memories, and experience moments of joy while navigating grief.
We’re incredibly grateful to Captain James for believing in our children and teens and for helping shine a national spotlight on the strength, resilience, and hope they carry with them every day.
The episode aired on ESPN2 and is available for streaming on ESPN+.
