Give Comfort, Hope, and Understanding to Grieving Children and Families

Valerie’s House is always looking for new volunteers at each of our locations throughout Southwest Florida. Read about opportunities to help children and families in your community feel supported after loss.

Group Facilitators

Facilitator/Co-Facilitator

A group facilitator meets our grieving children, teens, and adults where they are and provides compassionate, supportive guidance as they work through their grief. Facilitators listen, encourage, and engage participants in peer support groups.

Qualities Needed:

  • Compassion and understanding
  • Strong listening and communication skills
  • Willingness to support others through grief

No prior experience necessary – training provided by Valerie’s House.

Training: Comprehensive training is offered twice a year

Commitment: One year, two evenings per month from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Dinner Helper

Help Set up, Serve, and Clean up Dinners

The kitchen is the heart of the home and this holds true at Valerie’s House. Join us twice a month to set up, serve, and clean up after dinner. This is a way to connect with our families before they attend their groups!

A commitment of at least 1.5 hours, two evenings a month from 5:30 – 7:30 pm encouraged.

Group Activity Prep

Prepares Group Activities

Do you have a creative mind? Would you like to put those thoughts to work while assisting grieving children/teens in the community? Join our Program team and help bring grief support activities to life by gathering supplies and preparing the exercises used in peer support groups. No experience required. Just have fun with it!

Val’s PALs Mentor Program

Positive Adult Leadership for Grieving Children and Teens

Some of our grieving children are missing a role model due to their loss. Val’s PALs mentors fill that void. No specialized degree is needed; just your commitment, compassion, and consistency.

What is a Val’s PAL?

Val’s PALs are caring adults who invest time and energy to nurture and positively impact a young person. This is a mentorship program focused on building long-term connections.

Mentor Commitment:

  • One-year minimum commitment
  • Minimum of 4 hours per month, including in-person meetups and phone calls.
  • A desire to form a meaningful, lasting relationship with a mentee

Requirements:

  • Completed application
  • Background check
  • Reference check
  • Ongoing training
  • Monthly communication with Valerie’s House staff
