How We Think About Grief Makes All the Difference
At Valerie’s House, we know that grief is not something to “get over.” It’s something we learn to live with—moment by moment, day by day.
Grief is deeply personal. It doesn’t follow a timeline, and no two experiences are the same. That’s why our approach to healing is built on compassion, community, and the understanding that each person has the capacity to heal in their own way.
We Believe: Grief is individual. Grief is personal. There is no right way—or right time—to grieve. Grief often comes in waves. Healing is possible. You don’t move on—you move forward with love and memory.
Six Needs of Mourning
At Valerie’s House, we follow Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s Six Needs of Mourning, a gentle framework that helps families heal through action and connection. Grief isn’t something to “get over” — it’s something to move through.
The Six Needs:
• Acknowledge the Reality of the Death
• Embrace the Pain of the Loss
• Remember the Person Who Died
• Develop a New Self-Identity
• Search for Meaning
• Receive Ongoing Support from Others
