A Mural of Love: Honoring Karsen’s Memory

A Mural of Love: Honoring Karsen’s Memory

At Valerie’s House, we often say no child should grieve alone. This week, one of our families was reminded in the most beautiful way that no parent grieves alone either.

For 20 years, Christina Winters has been a teacher at Rayma C. Page Elementary School in Fort Myers. Earlier this year, her world was forever changed when her 13-year-old son, Karsen, died after a nearly five-year battle with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare muscle tumor.

Karsen’s Spirit

Karsen was known for his love of fishing. In 2021, the Make-A-Wish Foundation gave him a pontoon boat, and just a month before his passing, he joined Robert Arrington of the YouTube channel Deer Meat for Dinner on a shark trip. That day, he pulled in a giant lemon shark — living out his dream of one day becoming a charter boat captain.

But Karsen’s joy wasn’t just on the water. He was a prankster who loved making people laugh. Whether it was sneaking fake cockroaches into the hospital or serving chocolate-covered Brussels sprouts disguised as cake pops, he kept nurses, doctors, and family on their toes. He also loved gaming, especially Fortnite.

Christina remembers how those moments of humor were his way of bringing light to even the hardest days.

A Gift of Remembrance

This week, Christina’s colleagues at Rayma C. Page Elementary surprised her with a powerful tribute: a mural honoring Karsen.

Unveiled during a staff meeting, the artwork depicts a sunset, a boat, and Karsen fishing — a scene that captures his spirit and passion.

“I was brought to tears,” Christina said. “Tears of joy. I just felt so loved and so cared for and blessed.”

For Christina, the mural isn’t just art — it’s a place of peace in the middle of her school day, a reminder that her son’s memory lives on not only in her heart but in the hearts of her school family as well.

Love That Surrounds

At Valerie’s House, we are humbled to walk alongside Christina and her family. Stories like hers remind us that while grief can feel isolating, love has a way of showing up in powerful acts of remembrance and community.
