A Week of Healing, Connection, and Joy: Valerie’s House Summer Camp 2025

From July 7th through July 11th, something truly special happened at our Fort Myers Family is Forever Home.

Each day, about 50 grieving children and teens from our Valerie’s House program came together for five days of connection, healing, and laughter. Our 2025 Summer Camp was more than just a week of activities—it was a space where young people who have experienced loss could feel seen, supported, and safe while making memories they’ll never forget.

Grief Doesn’t Take a Summer Break

Summer can be a tough time for grieving families. The routines that provide structure during the school year fade, and so do the regular check-ins from teachers, counselors, and peers. That’s why we created this camp—to remind our kids they’re not alone, and to give them space to express their grief in healthy, creative ways.

Day One: Joy in the Journey

Camp kicked off with games, art, and group activities that helped everyone ease in and feel welcome. From painting to team-building exercises, the room was filled with laughter and movement. As one camper said, “It doesn’t feel like a grief group—it feels like family.”

Day Two: Community in Action

Tuesday brought incredible support from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, who offered free fingerprinting services for families. Dawn and Jim Mack, the visionaries behind our butterfly garden, stopped by to teach about the life cycle of butterflies—offering a beautiful metaphor for transformation and remembrance. And thanks to the South Florida PGA’s “Smiling Fore Life” campaign, our kids learned the basics of golf and got to let loose with some swings and smiles.

Day Three through Five: Growth, Connection, and Fun

The rest of the week was packed with meaningful moments—from water balloon games and tie-dye to heartfelt conversations and group projects that allowed our kids to honor their loved ones in creative ways. Each day had a theme, thoughtfully planned to offer a balance of reflection, fun, and emotional support. Staff and volunteers created a safe, joyful environment where campers could just be kids again—even while carrying the weight of grief.

A Message That Sticks with Us

Throughout the week, the common thread was connection. Whether it was through a shared memory, a silly game, or a quiet conversation, every camper left feeling more connected to each other—and to themselves.

This camp would not have been possible without our dedicated staff, incredible volunteers, and generous community partners who showed up for our kids in big ways. To each of you: thank you.

Because at Valerie’s House, we know that no child should grieve alone.
