Valerie’s House Featured in WINK News Story on Student Mental Health After FSU Shooting

Our very own Susan Rizzato, a licensed clinical social worker and grief counselor at Valerie’s House, was recently featured in a WINK News story about the emotional toll that school shootings are having on students and their families.
The piece focused on how the recent shooting at Florida State University has left many students shaken and fearful—not only from the direct threat, but also from memories of past trauma or a general sense that school no longer feels like a safe space. Susan shared that students may be navigating a wide range of emotions: fear, anxiety, flashbacks, and a deep sense of vulnerability. She emphasized that schools are meant to be places of safety and learning, and when that sense of security is disrupted, the emotional impact can be significant.
The story also highlighted the importance of open communication between parents and their children. Susan encouraged caregivers to listen actively and create space for honest conversations about how their children are feeling—not just taking “I’m fine” at face value.
We’re proud to see Valerie’s House represented in such an important conversation about mental health, safety, and healing. Media features like this help spread the word about the critical work being done every day to support grieving and traumatized children and families across our region.
