Today, Ashley is a college student at Boise State University—and a guiding voice for other grieving teens. Since her own time at Valerie’s House, she has been writing heartfelt letters of encouragement and placing them in care packages for kids in our program. Her words are honest, emotional, and filled with hope.
“You are not alone, and there are people who want to support you in this difficult time... Lean on your support system and take care of yourself. Brighter days will come.”
Ashley’s story is now reaching even more people thanks to Gulf Coast News and reporter Britt Leoni. In a deeply moving TV interview for their Stories to Share segment, Ashley returned to Valerie’s House to speak about her grief, her growth, and how she’s found purpose in helping others feel less alone.
The impact is immediate. Families, staff, and supporters across the Valerie’s House community are reaching out to say how much Ashley’s story moved them. Her honesty and vulnerability are not just being heard—they’re being felt.
“Ashley represents the heart of what Valerie’s House is all about,” says Founder and CEO Angela Melvin. “She’s turning her pain into purpose and using her experience to help others know they’re not alone.”
Ashley reminds us all that while grief changes our lives, it doesn’t diminish what’s possible. Her courage is proof that healing happens when we hold space for one another—and keep going together.
